WILDWOOD, N.J. (WPVI) -- It was a postcard sunset after a picture-perfect day at the shore.

Not the scene Bud Clayton and his grandsons expected when they left Warminster for North Wildwood on Sunday.

"We came down to see how the weather was. See the storm. Little disappointed, but happy nobody's getting hurt," said Bud Clayton of Warminster, Pennsylvania.

In Wildwood Crest, the beach was open despite strong rip currents. Lifeguards watched that bathers didn't venture in beyond knee-deep.

"We woke up this morning and it was sunny, so we decided to come to the beach," said Maureen Kuhar of Northeast Philadelphia.

On what should be a busy holiday weekend, Dune drive in Avalon looked like a ghost town. Forecasts for severe weather drove many, but not all vacationers inland.

"We're like ahhh we'll see, we'll try and wait it out, and see what happens. Luckily we did because it's nice and sunny out today," said Denise Pescatore of Morris County.

As some minor effects of Hermine wash ashore, there's concern for coastal flooding and beach erosion.

But the biggest impact so far has been on businesses like Scoops in Sea Isle City, hurt by the premature rush home to beat a storm that didn't come.

Gail Hughes, owner of Scoop, tells us she's losing money.

"Last night was 50 percent of what we did last year. But we can't control Mother Nature," said Hughes.
