South Jersey cleaning up after windy storm
GLOUCESTER CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- Residents of a mobile home park in Gloucester City, New Jersey say Tuesday's storm came through quickly, but it left behind a trail of damage.
"It sounded like a big bang like a boom," resident Edgar Valentine said.
And just like that, Tuesday afternoon's winds whipped through the community, ripping off roofs, uprooting trees and terrifying residents.
"And then this horrible noise I never heard before. When I looked across the street, I see that my neighbor's roof just went flying off; her trailer is unlivable they say," Valentine said.
"The wind came down the street it almost blew out our back windows. I ran in the living room and hid behind the wall because I thought it was a tornado," resident Judy Baker said.
"It was scary. You didn't know where to go, you didn't know what to do, so we just ran into bathroom, where there's no windows. So we're kind of sitting in there until it went over and we didn't hear the high wind anymore,"resident Katrina Hughes said.
The storm did not end there.
In fact, across Route 130 the scoreboard at Gloucester City High School still remains toppled over Wednesday after it was knocked down yesterday.
And just a few miles away in Bellmawr, a tree that fell onto a home on Adams Avenue is still on the roof.
The scene was similar all over South Jersey.
In Camden, a billboard nearly blew away.
In Mantua, a tree smashed onto the roof of this home.
Major roadways were also affected including Mantua Pike in West Deptford and Route 130 near the Brooklawn Circle.
On the Walt Whitman Bridge, two wobbling tractor trailers delayed traffic for an hour after the gusts proved too strong.
PSE&G reported that at one point, 20,000 customers were without power, but by Wednesday morning most of the power was restored.
