Strong winds create power outages, NJ district closes schools
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Strong winds took down power lines and trees across the Delaware Valley Tuesday morning, resulting in blocked roads and some school closures.
In Burlington County, New Jersey, two of the Lumberton School District's buildings were impacted, forcing officials to cancel classes for the day. All schools in the district are expected to be back in session on Wednesday.
PSE&G reported the wind blew down a tree onto wires on the 600 block of Eayrestown Road in Lumberton. They were working to restore power to the 292 customers affected.
Penn Wood High School Green Avenue Campus in Lansdowne, Pa. is also closed due to a power outage.
In Mullica Hill, New Jersey strong winds brought a tree down near the intersection of Fislerville Road and Rose Drive in Mullica Hill. Another tree fell onto a mobile home, but there were no injuries.
In Berwyn, Tredyffrin Township, downed wires closed the 200 block of Irish Road between Lizabeth Lane and Greene Road. Some PECO customers in the area lost power.
A downed tree created problems at Alan Wood Road near Ridge Pike in Conshohocken, Pa. It also brought down wires. Police were on the scene directing traffic around the area.
A tree also blocked the right lane of Kelly Drive in Fairmount Park.
In North Philadelphia, a tree fell onto cars on Schiller Street, bringing down wires, as well.
A downed tree partially blocked Meadow Lane near Briar Road in Springfield Township, Montgomery County.
Another tree came down on Rices Mill Road in Cheltenham, Pa.
Over in New Jersey, a tree blocked Mill Lane between Old York and Jacksonville roads in Burlington.
In Gloucester County, a tree brought down wires and fell onto a house on Stagecoach Road near the Black Horse Pike in Sicklerville.
At 6 a.m., the owner of a warehouse on East Burlington Street in Bordentown got the call that part of the 3-story Bradford Pear tree belonging to his next door neighbor had come down during the night.
The branches knocked off the corner of the building, landed on powerlines and caused structural damage. Chunks of bricks and concrete crashed onto the sidewalk below.
Building owner Paul Ciarrocco said, "Thank God it happened early in the morning because this is a main thorough fare to go up to Clara Barton School. Even my wife walks our kids this way. You see the bricks that could have been, that's not good. Fortunate enough that nobody was underneath."
There were no reports of injuries in these incidents.
