Foot injury leads police to 1 of 2 suspects in home invasion of elderly woman

WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police say a suspect is in custody in connection with the home invasion and robbery of an elderly woman in West Philadelphia.

The incident happened around 3 a.m. Sunday on the unit block of North Felton Street.

Authorities say two males, said to be in their 20s, knocked on 91-year-old Gertrude Montgomery's door before kicking down the entrance to gain entry.

"All of a sudden this guy with a gun kicked the door in, I mean, it was so loud it shocked me," said Montgomery. "He said, 'he took my stuff' so I don't know what that meant."

While inside, they took the victim's cell phone, iPad and computer.

At least one suspect pointed a shotgun at the victim, but luckily, she was unharmed.

Police say they were able to track down the woman's stolen goods a short time later at a nearby hospital.

"When he got ready to leave he reached in his bosom to pull it out and the gun went off and he shot himself in the foot, and that's how they were able to get my stuff back because he was in the hospital getting his treatment," said Montgomery.

She tells Action News she doesn't think her address was the intended target.

"I think they came to the wrong home, I really do, and I think he might have been as surprised as I was," said Montgomery.

Police have confirmed to Action News one of the suspects is now in custody.

The second suspect is still at large, police say.
