One person died and two were seriously injured in a small plane crash on Long Island on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
A single-engine Piper PA 28 crashed around 3 p.m. while approaching Republic Airport in Farmingdale, New York, authorities said. It had taken off from Republic Airport in East Farmingdale with three people onboard, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Shortly after takeoff, the pilot "issued a mayday signal and indicated there was smoke in the cockpit," Suffolk police said.
The plane crashed near 5th Street and North Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst, according to police.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and two of the plane's occupants were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said.
The Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB will investigate.
