Plane gets stuck in mud at New Castle airport

A Frontier Airlines plane headed to Florida left the taxiway and got stuck in the mud at the New Castle County Airport.

It happened at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

The pilot of Flight 1435 to Orlando, Florida, was making the turn onto the taxiway when the wheels went off the pavement and into the soft grass - where they sank into the mud.

"I guess the pilot backed out 20 feet and we heard a 'boom,'" said Diane Skilton of Elkton, Md. "The flight attendant was next to me and she went flying. We all reached out to kind of get her, we thought we hit something."

The passengers sat on the aircraft while decisions were being made about what to do.

Many, like Elena Carbonell, were traveling with young children.

"I was honestly frustrated because it was already past their bedtime and they were freaking out," she said. "But everybody on the plane told me they did really well, so...!"

All 105 passengers and five crew members were taken off the plane. Some went to hotels, while others waited at home.

There were no injuries.

The passengers finally left on a flight to Orlando around 1 p.m. Monday.

The plane was freed from the mud Monday night.
