Police have released surveillance video from an incident where a man was attacked, beaten with a baseball bat and shot in South Philadelphia.

QUEEN VILLAGE (WPVI) -- Police have released surveillance video from an incident where a man was attacked, beaten with a baseball bat and shot in South Philadelphia.

It happened early Saturday morning around 2:40 a.m. near 2nd and Carpenter streets.

A 36-year-old man from the city's Kensington section was walking towards 2nd Street when he was approached by a man with a handgun and a woman with a baseball bat.

After exchanging some words, the woman struck the man in the chest with the bat.

When the victim tried to run, the man fired two shots.

The couple then fled the scene heading east on the 100 block of Carpenter Street toward Front Street while the victim was left in the street but he survived.

He was taken to Jefferson University Hospital for treatment.

The incident has the neighborhood on edge.

"I just want to make sure walking down the street with my dog, somebody is not going to come up to me. I just want to feel safe," said Tiffany Fowler.

Police sources say the victim had drugs in his system. They say he initially claimed he didn't know his attackers and now he's not cooperating.

"I kind of get the sense there's definitely a connection there, whether it's more of a domestic thing or it was some kind of premeditated act," said Bill Rich.

Residents tell Action News that there have been recent car break ins but police haven't confirmed if the crimes have anything to do with the violent attack.

"It doesn't look like they kind of stumbled upon him in a vigilante type fashion. This is something that looks like they were kind of staking him out and waiting for him to come along," said Rich.

Meanwhile anyone with information should contact Philadelphia Police at 215.686.TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP (773847).
