Body recovered from car submerged in Schuylkill River

FAIRMOUNT PARK (WPVI) -- Rescuers have recovered a body from a Volkswagen that was submerged in the Schuylkill River after a crash.

The wreck happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday along Kelly Drive in Fairmount Park.

Police say the car was driven off the Roosevelt Boulevard, crossed over Ridge Avenue and then crossed Kelly Drive before hitting a curb. The impact sent the vehicle airborne.

The car landed in 6 feet of water about 40 feet away from shore.

Rescue crews eventually pulled the body of a 26-year-old man from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
