DA: Man charged in murder of fmr. girlfriend's father in Lower Moreland Township

HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. (WPVI) -- Two men have been arrested in connection to the shooting death of a man during a home invasion in Montgomery County,

District Attorney Risa Ferman said 20-year-olds Naadir Abdul-Ali and Desmond Smith are primarily responsible for the September 27th murder of 53-year-old Kevin Brown.

The incident happened around 11:00 p.m. in the 2300 block of Philmont Avenue in the Huntingdon Valley section of Lower Moreland Township.

Ferman says Brown was the father of Abdul-Ali's 18-year-old former girlfriend.

Ferman described the three-month relationship between Abdul-Ali and the young woman as "possessive, obsessive, violent, and his conduct was completely controlling."

Ferman said it is alleged this past August, Abdul-Ali, along with Smith, sexually assaulted his girlfriend.

She was told if she told anyone about the incident, he would send Desmond Smith to shoot her and her family.

The teen was then allegedly physically assaulted by Abdul-Ali in Philadelphia on September 21 forcing her to see medical attention.

On September 27, Ferman said Abdul-Ali asked his girlfriend for another chance, but she refused.

"He told her, 'if we can't be together, someone has got to go,' those were his words," Ferman said.

Ferman then spoke of a series of text messages between Abdul-Ali and his former girlfriend throughout the day of the murder "that made it quite clear Mr. Abdul-Ali would resort to violence to end this relationship."

One text from his former girlfriend read:

You are an abuser and abusers don't get any better, they get worse. You would have killed me so the only option I had was to leave the way I did. You wouldn't have let me leave willingly and we both know that. Did we have our good days and laughs? Absolutely. And I love that, but at the end of the day, you put your hands on me.

Ferman said Abdul-Ali and Smith then made their way to Brown's home in Huntingdon Valley.

Authorities say he, his wife, and at least two of the Brown's three children were at home at the time of the home invasion.

The suspects opened fire, hitting Brown in the neck.

A neighbor described the gunfire, telling Action News she heard at least fifteen popping sounds coming from the home.

Brown and his wife both escaped through a second floor bedroom window and jumped down to the ground where he was found by arriving police officers.

He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police tracked these suspects down through text messages and identification by members of Brown's family who were present at the time of the murder.

The D.A. says more arrests are expected in this case.
