NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police opened fire on a dog after it attacked a 4-year-old girl in North Philadelphia.
The attack happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday along West Ontario and North 10th streets.
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small explains that police got several calls that a child was being attacked by multiple dogs. However, when officers arrived on the scene they found that it was just one dog - not several.
Police approached the dog, who charged after them. That's when the officers opened fire, killing the dog.
The girl suffered a bite to her face. She was treated at the scene and is expected to be OK.
Authorities say the pit bull had been unleashed, running loose.
Detectives are talking to the owner. No word yet, on if any charges will be filed.
