LOWER MERION TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- A 68-year-old man died after falling 45 feet down a trash pit in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County.



It happened at 12:54 p.m. Saturday at the Robert J. Koegel Public Works Complex, located on the 1300 block of North Woodbine Avenue in Penn Valley.



The Lower Merion Refuse Department was accepting household trash and recycling as part of a Fall Clean-up Event.



A 68-year-old man died after falling 45 feet down a trash pit in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County.


According to police, the man fell 45 feet into the trash pit while unloading garbage from a U-Haul truck.



Fire and ambulance crews responded and rescued the victim.



He was rushed to Lankenau Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m.



The Fall Clean-up Event was cancelled for the rest of the day after the accident. The event will re-open Sunday at 8 a.m.
