Mother, son struck in Woodlynne hit-and-run

WOODLYNNE, N.J. (WPVI) -- A mother and her son were struck in a hit-and-run in Woodlynne, Camden County and it was all caught on surveillance video. They survived and now the victim is speaking out to Action News.

Irene King and her 5-year-old son Michael Gorman were on their way home from the store Thursday night. They were walking across Maple Avenue at Woodlynne Avenue when that SUV slammed into them and kept going.

"This big truck came and I pushed my son out of the way and I got the impact," said King.

What went through the mother's mind?

"I was going to die at that time. I felt like I was going to die," said King.

Call it a miracle because King and her son survived. They're home recovering from a number of injuries.

The camera at D&D Market captured the hard to watch incident but it was employee Don Pham who saw it up close. He ran over to help and called 911.

"It was mind blogging like I didn't even really believe that it happened until I saw the mother in the street screaming and yelling and the kid crying," said Pham.

Before the impact King happened to switch her son to the other side, something she's done in the past for safety reasons.

"I think that switch probably saved his life because she took the blunt force of the truck," said Bryon Gorman, victim's husband.

Her husband took us through the scene and he's praying police find the hit-and-run driver. The only description is that he was a man who was in a dark or black newer model Dodge Durango.

"To see that video and to feel what my family is going through, I feel that he should be treated the same way. I know that's wrong, that's some harsh words but that's how I feel," said Gorman.

Police say the hit-and-run vehicle had a Pennsylvania license plate and it should have some front end damage.
