New museum honoring America to open in Philadelphia

OLD CITY (WPVI) -- A new museum will be opening in Philadelphia honoring the beginnings of America.

The Museum of the American Revolution opens on April 19 at 3rd and Chestnut in Old City.

Action News has been giving viewers some glimpses of what's at the museum in recent weeks.

But on Thursday, we got a more comprehensive look at what's inside.

In the heart of historic Philadelphia, The Museum of the American Revolution is about to open to the public.

Using thousands of historic artifacts, the new museum tells the story of how the United States became an independent nation.

Scott Stephenson, Museum of the American Revolutions said, "This takes you on a journey from being subjects of the British Empire in 1760 through the creation of the American Republic and explores the legacy of the American Revolution, both in America and around the world."

Visitors are asked questions - then provided with artifacts, artwork and interactive exhibits to help them draw conclusions about the founding of this nation.

"They will see 16,000 square feet of core exhibition. Objects. Witness objects from the American Revolution. They can stand under a re-creation of the Boston Liberty tree. They can stand in the middle of the battle of Brandywine," said Stephenson.

The museum includes George Washington's actual tent where the general lived and worked from 1778-1783.

A time-lapse of the display is being constructed. Travel blogger Allen Barkus believes Old City is the perfect spot for this look back into American history.

He said, "Oh this is a perfect place for it. We're sitting in the most historic mile in America, so this perfect for this location."

Chris Young picked a corner for his restaurant, The Little Lion, anticipating the museum and the tourists to come.

"The Little Lion, we've watched it being built for the last year and a half to two years. And the day's almost here. We're very excited," said Young.

Visitors are urged to go online to pre-purchase tickets. The ticket is good for two consecutive days.
