Philadelphia police say an officer was forced to open fire on a armed man in North Philadelphia.

NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police say an officer was forced to open fire on a armed man in North Philadelphia.



It happened around 7:00 p.m. at 8th Street and Fairmount Avenue.



Police say a 6th district officer was responding to a call of a man with a gun.



According to police, the officer saw a man with a handgun in his waistband.



The officer ordered the man to show his hands and the suspect refused.



That's when police say the suspect began to pull the gun from his waistband.



The officer opened fire, hitting the suspect once in the chest.



The suspect was taken to Hahnemann Hospital in critical condition. The officer was unhurt.



Police say they recovered a loaded semi-automatic handgun from the suspect.



No word on the identity of the suspect or the officer involved.



The incident is under investigation.
