PENNSVILLE, N.J. (WPVI) -- Police have made an arrest in a weekend hit-and-run that left a teenage high school football player in critical condition.
23-year-old Zachary D. McDonough turned himself in to Pennsville police Monday afternoon.
McDonough had nothing to say as police led him to a jail cell after what they described as a full videotaped confession.
Police say McDonough admits he had been out drinking before the accident, but it's too late to prove that.
He is charged with aggravated assault, leaving the scene and failure to report an accident.
Police say others may also have been in the car and they could also be facing charges.
The arrest came hours after police say they found his heavily damaged car hidden under a car cover behind his apartment house on the 300 block of North Hook Road.
The car matched the description of a suspect vehicle, a Hyundai Accent.
Police say McDonough stole that car cover from a neighbor.
The car was discovered, police say, after an officer became suspicious after seeing the covered car.
17-year-old Kyle Pszenny, a wide receiver on the Pennsville Memorial High School football team, was struck around 1:15 a.m. Sunday near Hook Road and Lee Avenue.
Investigators say Pszenny was heading home from his girlfriend's house on his skateboard when he was struck by a Hyundai Elantra.
Brian Wright lives nearby.
"The car never stopped. It just slowed down and took right back off again," Wright said.
Pszenny was taken to the Christiana Hospital in critical condition. He suffered severe leg and head injuries.
The school says he is out of surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
Friends say Kyle is showing signs of improvement after brain surgery yesterday.
Action News spoke with a close friend of the victim who grew up with him.
"He's loved by everyone in high school, real nice kid, makes everyone smile - bad things happen to good people," said Ryan Gray.
Gray says what happened to his friend Kyle has affected everyone.
His classmates all wore blue today to show their support including the football team captain.
"He was a tough kid. He was a really good athlete. He was one of our best players. Every game, every practice, he always has a positive attitude," Cody McNiss said.
His supporters are relieved police now have the driver who allegedly ran him down.
Now, they're just focusing on Kyle's recovery.
"He's like a best friend to me, the brother I never had. I've been worried about him since the incident happened and just praying he makes a speedy recovery in the hospital," cousin Kristian McNiss said.
Kyle had a job washing dishes at the Riverview Inn.
He left late Saturday night after a wedding party before heading to his girlfriend's house.
