DARBY TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- A 10-year-old boy is clinging to life after he accidentally shot himself in the face with his father's gun, police say.

Police in Darby, Delaware County first received reports of a child shot at 10:20 p.m. Saturday on the 1400 block of Calcon Hook Road.

When officers arrived, they found the boy had a gunshot wound to the face.

The officers rushed him to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

"Thanks to the alertness of the first arriving officers on scene, they scooped the child right away. He was lifeless at the time we arrived," Darby Township Police Chief Leonard McDevitt said.

McDevitt said one officer drove while another was performing CPR in the back of the car.

The child was fist taken to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital where was revived before being transported to CHOP.

Police say the boy and his sister were dropped off at their father's job at an auto repair business after their mother had to go to work.

The boy found the gun inside his father's car, according to authorities.

The Delaware County District Attorney's office will determine if the father will face any charges in the shooting.
