WINSLOW TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Six people, including a young child, are being treated at area hospitals after a serious, multi-vehicle crash in Winslow Township, N.J.
It happened at 6:30 a.m. Monday on Route 73 at Hayes Mill Road.
Images from Chopper 6 HD broadcast on Action News at 6:55 a.m. showed several heavily damaged vehicles at the scene.
Winslow Township Police say the collision involved a total of 6 vehicles.
A Ford F-250 pickup truck rear-ended a car, which then appeared to have smashed into another car.
Police say a young child was strapped in a car seat in the back of the car struck by the Ford.
She was one of two people airlifted to Cooper University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
"There was a child involved in crash," said Winslow Twp. Police Capt. Richard Ostermueller. "She was airlifted to Cooper. Her mother went by ground ambulance."
Two other people were taken by ambulance to the same hospital, and two more were taken to Virtua Hospital.
There was no immediate word on the conditions of any of the victims.
Two of the cars sustained lesser damage, but four of the vehicles remained on scene for hours.
A heavily damaged Mini Cooper was facing the wrong way. An occupant in that vehicle had been trapped and was extricated by the fire department.
All of the vehicles involved had been traveling north on Route 73 near Hayes Mill Road.
The northbound lanes were shut down for hours as accident investigators collected evidence.
"It's still very early into the investigation," said Ostermueller. "We still don't know what caused the pickup truck to hit the other vehicles."
More information on the crash and the conditions of the victims was expected later in the day on Monday.
