Waterworks hits historic milestone

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- One of Philadelphia's most historic treasures is celebrating a major milestone.

Officials gathered on Water Works Drive to mark the 200th anniversary of the Fairmount Water Works.

It was the first successful urban public water system in America and set standards for cities across the country.

In recent years it has been transformed into a living laboratory for the study of water systems and environmental protection.
