Hillary Clinton speaks to AME Convention in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton made a campaign appearance in Philadelphia Friday.

Clinton spoke for about 25 minutes as the keynote speaker for the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) National Convention at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Attendees said her appearance couldn't have come at a better time, after a week of gun violence and heartbreak.

While she was greeted with applause and cheers, her speech quickly turned somber.

"I have been following the news of the past few days with horror and grief," Clinton told the crowd of thousands.

The candidate outlined what she would do as president to address gun violence and criminal justice reform after the violence this week in Louisiana, Minnesota and Dallas, Texas.

"I will bring law enforcement and communities together to develop national guidelines on the use of force by police officers," she said.

Clinton also pledged $1 billion in her first budget for police training programs and research.

People we spoke with said it's a good start.

"We need training," said Cordelia Mitchell from Jacksonville, Florida. "We need sensitivity training, and I think what she's proposing will go a long way in getting us to where we need to be."

Others were concerned about how her plan would be received in Washington.

"We'll have to see how it goes, how it's going to be accepted," said Piccola Washington from Pine Bluff, Arkansas. "We've got to have a Congress up there that's going to be willing to follow the leadership of the president."

Many were inspired by Clinton's words. They said they hope those words kindle actions that will end tension between police and black communities.

"We should be together and work together and love each other together," said the Rev. Margaret Young from Olney, Maryland. "I'm hoping that is going to be the outcome of all of this."
