Brian Hoyer out, Brandon Weeden to start for Texans

Houston TexansquarterbackBrian Hoyer is still in the NFL concussion protocol as he recovers from a concussion suffered Dec. 13 and will not play Sunday at the Tennessee Titans, according to ESPN Texans reporter Tania Ganguli and multiple media reports.

Brandon Weeden will take Hoyer's place, becoming Houston's fourth starting quarterback this season. Weeden made his debut with the Texans in Indianapolis on Sunday after T.J. Yates tore his ACL.

Hoyer, who is recovering from his second concussion in less than a month and has not been cleared by doctors, is still traveling with the Texans to Nashville. He returned to practice on a limited basis but remains in the concussion protocol.Hoyer did not take reps with the first team during the week and, because of that, would not have started had he been cleared to play Sunday. He is expected to meet with doctors Monday, a league source told ESPN's Adam Caplan.

B.J. Daniels, signed off Seattle's practice squad Monday, will back up Weeden, who was signed Nov. 19 after being released by the Cowboys two days earlier.

The Texans (7-7) took a big step toward what would be their third AFC South title last week with a 16-10 win in Indianapolis -- their first ever in Indy. They can clinch a playoff berth Sunday, with the easiest scenario a Houston win and a Colts loss or tie in Miami. Beating the Titans also would ensure the Texans of finishing no worse than .500.
