The Carmel (Indiana) High School girls' swimming team splashed into the record books Saturday, setting a national mark for most consecutive state titles in any sport with its 30th straight.
With several former Carmel swimmers on hand, the team won nine of the 11 swimming events at the IHSAA girls high school state championships in Indianapolisand finished with 438 points, easily ahead of runner-up Hamilton Southeastern, which totaled 193.5.
"In so many respects, it's a relief," coach Chris Plumb told the Indianapolis Star. "We knew we could do it, but until we did it?"
The Carmel girls broke a tie with the boys' swim team at Honolulu's Punahou High School, the alma mater of President Barack Obama, which won 29 straight state titles from 1958 to 1986.
