CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jason Peters, the left tackle touted by Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly as a "future Hall of Famer," was carted off the field during the first quarter of Sunday night's 27-16 loss to the Carolina Panthers and was later ruled out for the game with lower back spasms, the team announced.

Peters went down while blocking the Panthers'Jared Allenand lay facedown on the grass for several moments. He was taken off thefield on a cart and then taken inside for X-rays.

He was originally questionable to return but was ruled out early in the third quarter.

The Eagles' offensive line was struggling before Peters was injured. Peters gave up a sack by Panthers defensive end Mario Addison on the Eagles' first possession.

With Peters out, right guard Matt Tobin moved to left tackle. Dennis Kelly came in and replaced Tobin at right guard.

Peters, 33, is a perennial Pro Bowl selection. He has twice torn the Achilles tendon in his right leg, injuries that caused him to miss the entire 2012 season.
