John Daly throws club, found by young man, into Lake Michigan after a 10

HAVEN, Wis. -- John Daly was cruising along inside the cut line at the PGA Championship on Friday -- until John Daly-type things started to happen.

Playing the par-3 seventh hole, Daly pushed his tee shot right, splashing it into nearby Lake Michigan. He took a drop and again found the lake. He dropped another, and splashed that one, too.

Finally, Daly bailed out to the left side of the green, then helicopter-tossed his iron into the lake. It was soon recovered by a young man in a boat, who held it aloft triumphantly.

"You body goes into a little shock after that," Daly said after finishing his round of 9-over 81 to put him at 10 over for the tournament, which was halted by storms late on Friday before the last in the field had finished.

"I know we all go through this; I seem to go through it more than anybody."

After a three-putt, Daly finished with a septuple-bogey 10 on the hole, dropping him well down the leaderboard as he missed the cut.

"Reflex. It's nothing more than reflex," Daly said about hurling the club. "It's like getting made when you write a bad story. Or slamming down when the kids aren't listening.

"I've always said throwing a club shows you care. I know it's not the right thing to do."

This is, of course, not the first time Daly has carded a big number.

In fact, it marks the 17th time that Daly has posted a double-digit total on a single hole in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. His most recent was a 12 that occurred during last year's Valspar Championship.

According to PGA Tour officials, Daly's 17 double-digit scores rank first on the list of current players;Robert Gamezis second with five.

Told that Rory McIlroy threw a club once at Doral, Daly remarked, "I've got him beat by about 180 throws."

Daly, who won the PGA Championship in 1991, posted an opening round 1-over 73. He was even par through six holes on Friday before making the 10.
