Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco could miss the rest of his rookie season after being diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture in his left wrist.
Franco, who was hit by a pitch on his wrist against the Diamondbacks on Aug. 11, was placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays.
The Phillies initially had hoped that Franco would avoid a DL stint after preliminary X-rays were negative. But general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced Tuesday that an MRI confirmed anon-displaced fracture in Franco's ulnar styloid.
Amaro said the Phillies have not decided whether Franco will return this season but admitted that they would be "cautious." Franco will wear a splint for the next two to three weeks before being re-evaluated, according to Amaro.
Franco, 22, is batting .277 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs this season. The Phillies recalled outfielder Aaron Altherr from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace Franco on the 25-man roster.
