NFL tells teams no positive drug tests from scouting combine

The NFL has notified all 32 teams that no player tested positive in drug testing at February's scouting combine, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The league usually distributes the results of drug tests about a week before the draft, and those results almost always include the names of some players who tested positive, which can affect draft results.

Several players in recent drafts saw their draft stock drop after failing a drug test. None of the players whose combine drug tests have reportedly been flagged since 2010 were selected in the first round.

Last year, former Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory told reporters that he tested positive for marijuana at the scouting combine. Gregory, who had been identified as a potential top-10 draft selection, was selected late in the second round (60th overall) by the Dallas Cowboys.

He is suspended for the first four games of this season after violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy during his rookie year.

In 2014, former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger provided a diluted urine sample, Schefter reported, while a Fox Sports report named Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan, LSU defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, and Florida State linebackers Telvin Smith and Christian Jones as players also failing drug tests. Former Miami Hurricanes right tackle Seantrel Henderson also tested positive for marijuana at the combine that year.

Mettenberger slid to the sixth round in the draft, when he was selected by the Tennessee Titans 178th overall. Jernigan fell to the Ravens in the second round (48th overall), Smith was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round (144th overall) and Henderson went in the seventh round to the Buffalo Bills (237th overall). Johnson and Jones went undrafted.

In 2013, former California wide receiver Keenan Allen's tests were red-flagged due to suspiciously high levels of water in his system and he was ordered to take another test, Schefter reported. Allen's agent deniedhis client had failed any drug test, but the wide receiver fell to the San Diego Chargers in the third round (No. 76 overall).

In 2012, former Ohio State tackle Mike Adams, Arizona linebacker Vontaze Burfict and Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley were among players who reportedly failed combine drug tests. Adams was selected in the second round (56th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Hosley went to the New York Giants in the third round (94th overall). Burfict went undrafted but later signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Former Georgia defensive end Justin Houston and Iowa defensive tackle Christian Ballard reportedly failed drug tests at the 2011 combine. Houston fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round (70th overall) and has gone on to become a four-time Pro Bowl selection as a linebacker. Ballard was picked in the fourth round by the Minnesota Vikings (106th overall).

In 2010, former Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer and USC tight end Anthony McCoy both reportedly failed combine drug tests. Both players were selected in the sixth round: McCoy went to the Seattle Seahawks (185th overall) and Dwyer went to the Steelers (188th overall).
