Patriots, Eagles combine to miss 2 PATs, FG in first half of Super Bowl

MINNEAPOLIS -- A wild Super Bowl LII already has produced one unusual outcome. Both teams missed an extra point in the first half for the first time in NFL playoff history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The Philadelphia Eagles' Jake Elliott was wide-right in the first quarter, and the New England Patriots' Stephen Gostkowski was wide-left in the second quarter. Gostkowski also missed a 26-yard field goal in the second quarter, hitting the upright after a low snap took him out of rhythm.

There was no weather or other conditions to speak of. U.S. Bank Stadium is an indoor facility.

The last time that kickers of opposite teams missed extra points in the same half of an NFL playoff game was in 1993, according to Elias. In that game, the Buffalo Bills' Steve Christie and the Oakland Raiders' Jeff Jaeger missed extra points in the third quarter of the Bills' 29-23 divisional-round victory.

The NFL moved extra points back to the 15-yard line in 2016. In 2017, NFL place-kickers converted 1,034 of 1,066 extra-point attempts (94.0 percent.)
