Roger Federer sharp in third-round win over Philipp Kohlschreiber

NEW YORK -- Playing with precision, even by his high standards, Roger Federer advanced to the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Saturday.

Although Federer saw his run of 78 consecutive service holds broken in the second set, he got off the court again quickly. He's won all nine sets he's played, and all three of those matches required a total of one more minute than No. 9 seed Marin Cilic's 4 hour, 11 minute third-round victory on Friday.

"I think I won the big points today," Federer said in his on-court interview. "The difference in the match was only five points [80-75]. I served well at the end, even though it was a bit of an up-and-down match for us.

"It's good to get through in three sets, so I'm very pleased."

The No. 2 seed's Monday opponent will be American John Isner, a winner over Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic via retirement.
