Myspace warns account holders of hack

Myspace account holders are being told to update their passwords after the social media site was hacked prior to Memorial Day.

"Shortly before the Memorial Day weekend, we became aware that stolen Myspace user login data was being made available in an online hacker forum. The data stolen included user login data from a portion of accounts that were created prior to June 11, 2013 on the old Myspace platform," a statement on the Myspace blog said.

Affected information in the breach include email addresses, Myspace usernames, and Myspace passwords.

Myspace has invalidated the passwords of all known affected users and will notify them.

"These users returning to Myspace will be prompted to authenticate their account and to reset their password by following instructions at https://myspace.com/forgotpassword," the statement read.

Myspace says those allegedly responsible for this attack are behind recent hacks of LinkedIn and Tumblr.

Time Inc. bought the social networking site in February.

In a statement, Jeff Bairstow, Time Inc. Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, said, "We take the security and privacy of customer data and information extremely seriously-especially in an age when malicious hackers are increasingly sophisticated and breaches across all industries have become all too common. Our information security and privacy teams are doing everything we can to support the Myspace team."
