I-95 reopens after tractor-trailer crash in South Phila.; 1 person hurt

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- All lanes of I-95 North are back open after a crash involving a tractor-trailer and at least two other vehicles in South Philadelphia that left one person injured.

The crash happened before 6:30 a.m. Friday in the northbound lanes, north of the Walt Whitman Bridge exit.

Images from Sky 6 near the scene showed a tractor-trailer which appeared to have collided with a dark-colored SUV. Both were blocking the shoulder and left lane of the four-lane highway.

All but one northbound lane was shut down as police investigated and crews arrived to begin cleaning the road and removing the wreckage.

Video from Chopper 6 HD showed a light-colored sedan wedged between the front driver's side of the tractor-trailer and the concrete barrier dividing the north- and southbound lanes of I-95.

Action News is told some diesel fuel spilled on the road as a result of the crash.

One person was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital. There was no immediate word on the extent of that person's injuries.

All but one northbound lane was shut down as police investigated and crews arrived to begin cleaning the road and removing the wreckage.

Sections of the road remained blocked for the next 2 hours, causing an extensive traffic backup on I-95 North.

The scene was finally cleared, and the traffic jam had started easing, by 8:30 a.m.
