SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- It's a day thousands have been waiting for: The Philadelphia Eagles were once again at Lincoln Financial Field.

Sunday was the first open practice for Birds fans in South Philadelphia and 23,000 answered the call.

Before practice started, there were all kinds of activities from rock climbing for the kids to autographs with Eagles legends Barrett Brooks and Vince Papale.

It was also Military Appreciation Day. United States Marine Corps Sergeant Michael Elias was in attendance, along with his young daughter Mia.

"I think it's great. It's always something I wanted to come out and do and now that I'm back home for a little bit, I get to finally do it," Elias said.

But for one family, this was more than just a chance to see their favorite team practice.

Rich Losey and his stepson Brayden were watching the Eagles for some much needed distraction.

"He was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma about five weeks ago," Losey said.

He says spending this time together means the world.

"He's my hero," Losey said.

A YouCaring site has been set up for Brayden and his family.
