PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are investigating a hit-and-run in Mayfair that left a 72-year-old woman dead on Friday night.

Police said the driver was under the influence when he was traveling down Ryan Avenue just before 8 p.m. and struck the woman.

While she was rushed to the hospital, detectives remained at the scene to collect evidence, including the victim's shoes and walker, that were in the middle of the road.

The woman, originally listed as critical condition, succumbed to her injuries in the hospital just after 6 a.m. Saturday.

A man who works nearby said it's devastating to know the driver just left the victim.

"That's terrible. That's terrible," said Thommie Hampton from West Philadelphia. "Honestly, it's sick because he could have stopped, and I don't think that was right. Life is precious, and people just don't care about life no more."

Officers located the driver about two miles from the scene near Walker and Levick streets just minutes after the incident. He has not been identified.

Residents praised the police for their quick actions to arrest the driver.

"It's good he's off the street because it could have been somebody else and then somebody else. It's selfish," said Hampton.
