Holiday travel rush gets underway in Philadelphia as people hit the roads, rails and air

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Thanksgiving holiday travel is in full swing!

We have hit what is traditionally the Thanksgiving getaway day on Wednesday.

It would behoove you to get on the road early, when there's lighter traffic. The best time to hit the road on Wednesday is before 11 a.m. Then, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., expect company as the traffic picks up.



AAA projects nearly 82 million people nationally will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving travel period, which is a 2% boost from last year.



AAA designates its Thanksgiving travel period as beginning Tuesday and running through the following Monday.

Passengers were ready to board their trains at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

"I'm going to Washington, DC, to visit family," said Daniel Pettyjohn of Southwest Philadelphia.

From Tuesday through Sunday, Amtrak is adding extra cars to its Northeast Regional routes.



Amtrak is also increasing trip frequencies for popular destinations along the Northeast Corridor, including Philadelphia, Boston, New York and DC.

"I love Amtrak. I work for SEPTA- I just take Amtrak all the time," said Vanessa Milligan of West Philadelphia.

"I'm always visiting my daughter and her family in Maryland. With the brand new baby that just arrived a few days ago. Glam-mom is on her way!" Milligan added.

Most will travel by car, with Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons expected to be the most congested drive times before Thursday.



Eden Cotton had a friendly face waiting for her after a long ride home from school, her puppy, Toofa.

"It was delayed. It kept getting delayed, so I'm an hour later, but she waited for me," she said.

She first took the train and then hopped in the car to get home for break.

Some travelers say they didn't realize the roads would be so busy.

"I didn't really think about it too much," said Nate Bowers from Massachusetts. He stopped at a rest stop in Upper Chichester to stretch.

Sunday is projected to be the heaviest traffic day after the holiday as drivers head home.



At the pump, drivers are paying about the same as this time last year.

Wednesday is expected to be the busiest day at Philadelphia International Airport prior to Thanksgiving.

AAA predicts more than 21,000 Philadelphia-area residents will travel by other modes of transportation -- like a bus, train, or ship. That "other" category is up 4.6% over last year.

Last year, over the Thanksgiving travel period, more than 150,000 passengers traveled through 30th Street Station, which was roughly a 6% boost from 2023.
