Amtrak has canceled more than two dozen trains in the Northeast due to the heat as holiday travel is in full effect.
The DOT will have an open design competition starting this October through May of 2026 which will determine the final design of the station.
It's not exactly a bullet train: Amtrak's schedules show the NextGen Acela runs slower than the existing Acela.
It's because Amtrak would lose $71 million in annual payments from SEPTA, which leases the lines.
The new Acela can reach a maximum speed of 160 miles per hour. That's 10 miles per hour faster than the current fleet.
As the heat wave ramps up, it's causing trains to slow down.
