According to investigators, a female officer responded to the call and encountered Ilodigew outside a home while he was holding a knife.
Borough officials said the officer first attempted to subdue him with a Taser before firing her weapon.
A nearby resident said the confrontation and gunfire woke her.
"Someone shouted, and then hearing them shout, I heard, I want to say, two or three shots," the neighbor said.
Police said Ilodigew was transported to Lankenau Medical Center, where he later died.
The officer was taken to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Officials said the officer has been placed on administrative duty while the investigation continues.
