MLK Drive Bridge reopens to pedestrians, bicyclists Friday; drivers Monday

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Pedestrians and bicyclists will have the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Bridge all to themselves this weekend. Then, drivers will once again get to use the bridge starting Monday morning.

Members of bicycle organizations were the first to cross the newly reconstructed bridge on Friday after a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Cherelle Parker.

The bridge, which is part of MLK Drive, serves as a crucial alternative to I-76.

It was widened to include three lanes of traffic with a 10.5 ft. shared pedestrian and bike path connecting to the MLK Drive Trail, along the western banks of the Schuylkill River.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Bridge was supposed to open early 2025, but cold weather during the winter caused a few delays, officials said.

The MLK Drive Bridge underwent a lot of work over the years since it opened in 1966.

Results of an inspection in 2021 revealed that it was deteriorating and needed to be rebuilt.

Construction began in the spring of 2023 after the federal government approved $20 million to pay for all of it through the infrastructure bill.

Crews demolished and rebuilt the road deck, barriers, and support piers from scratch.

The bridge opens to drivers Monday morning at 7 a.m.
