HUNTING PARK (WPVI) -- Disney along with local volunteers joined with people across the country to try to set a world record and they did it all while helping children in need.

It was more than the Radio Disney Philadelphia tunes that had these kids bouncing at the Vaird Boys and Girls Club.

On Thursday they all got brand new backpacks, stuffed with school supplies by teen volunteers, with an assist from 6abc.

"We just want to help. We love to see the kids smile. A lot of us love being with the kids," said Agatha Fong, teen volunteer.

The 1,000 backpacks will be packed to the zippers with notebooks, crayons and fun games.

All of the items were donated by 6abc's parent company Disney, as part of an effort to set a world record for the most backpacks stuffed in a single day.

"Usually we have to go out in piecemeal, we get a couple hundred from one partner, a couple hundred from another. Having 1,000 bags ensures that all of our kids will have the supplies that they need to go back to school and be able to achieve throughout the school year," said Ariel Goldring, Boys and Girls Club executive director.

For the 6abc family, it was an honor to be a part of the last day of the 6abc Disney Summer of Service.

And a reminder: If you know somebody ages 5 to 18 who has been active in the community, make sure to nominate them for our Summer of Service award. Thursday is the last day and they could win a $1000 award.

The Disney effort extended across the country and to our friends at GMA, who started the day stuffing backpack on set and in Times Square.

The kindness has a special impact here in Philadelphia.

"Philadelphia has continually had education resources cut, so to have corporate sponsors step in and help fill some of that gap means a lot," said Goldring.
