NEWARK Del. (WPVI) -- A first-time mom in Delaware welcomed her baby girl into the world in a very unlikely place - a rest stop off I-95.

"She seemed more scared than anything. Obviously she just had a child on the side of a highway and it was her first child," said Travis Duffin, New Castle County paramedic.

After failing to make it to the hospital in time, the woman gave birth in the front seat of her car at a Delaware rest stop.

The woman's mother and sister were in the car with her.

Duffin, a paramedic, got there moments afterward.

"I moved to the driver's side and was able to clamp the umbilical cord , cut it, then proceeded to take the baby, wrap the baby up and mover her to an ambulance where she could be warm," said Duffin.

When the family realized that the baby was coming, they immediately called for help, getting step-by-step instructions.

"In the back seat was the patient's little sister. Apparently she called 911 and got directions from dispatchers to use shoelaces to cut the umbilical cord and the mother was outside waving down the car," said Duffin.

Mom and baby were later taken to the hospital and are said to be resting comfortably.
