Saving with 6abc: Take advantage of fall travel deals

Most people take their big vacations over the summer. But if you've waited until Fall to get away, you can find some great deals.

We're in the midst of what's called the "Shoulder Season" in the travel industry. And if you're on a budget, this is a great time to take a trip.

Jeanenne Tornatore, Senior Editor for Orbitz.com, says "It's this time when the crowds are gone, because the kids are back in school, but the temperatures are still really nice and there are great discounts at hotels across the country."

Tornatore also says beach destinations are a great choice for a getaway right now. "Places like Ocean City, Maryland, up into Maine, even like Martha's Vineyard and some of those places that in the summer, are maybe out of people's reach, from a price standpoint, this is the time of year to go and soak up some of that sun before winter comes."

Another good choice, places known for skiing.

She says, "And then, the mountain towns, out west in Colorado, in Tahoe, those are destinations where you're going to find deep discounts before the ski resorts open in late November."

Once you pick a destination, Tornatore suggests booking your hotel and airfare together.

"During this kind of off-season, airlines and hotels that need to fill their rooms and seats will offer deep discounts as part of a package," she explains.

Finally, she suggests you stack your deals. "Look at stacking your discounts. So, we are already seeing low rates at hotels this time of year, you're also going to find promo codes, and other incentives, like free resort credits, free breakfasts, those types of deals that you can add on top of the already low rates to get the most value out of your travel during this period."
