Firefighters battle underground fire in Center City Philadelphia

CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- Firefighters responded to a smoky situation in Center City Philadelphia.

Fire crews were called to 9th and Walnut streets shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday after smoke was seen coming from underground.

Video from an Action News viewer showed flames and heavy smoke shooting up from a manhole near Walnut Street Towers.

There was no immediate word what the source of the smoke might be.

Walnut Street was shut down at 9th Street as crews investigated the source of the smoke.

There have been no reports of injuries or businesses in the area being affected in any way.
