VIDEO: Cup can count calories in drinks
Its creators say a new product, called Vessyl, can count the calories in your drinks.

A lot of people count calories in their food, but not their drinks.

That's where a new product, called Vessyl, comes in. Its creators say it's a cup that counts the calories - and more - of any liquid poured inside.

"The information it sees is the calories, caffeine, protein, fat, sugar, vitamins, minerals and more," said Justin Lee, co-found and CEO of Mark One, the makers of Vessyl.

Lee wouldn't give all of the details, except to say Vessyl works by analyzing fluids at a molecular level.

The information pours into an app and can be linked to activity trackers.

"When people track what they consume, the likelihood of them becoming healthier, achieving their health goals, is much higher," said Lee.

Dr. Bill Hanson at Penn Medicine follows trends and new products in health care.

He says Vessyl fits in with what we're seeing - devices that measure our health habits.

But as for who will use it?

"There are certain people who will definitely take advantage of this information and that's probably a small subset," Hanson said.

He sees a bigger benefit for people with medical problems, like diabetics who need to track sugar and patients with congestive heart failure who need to measure fluid intake

But he says it takes very sophisticated technology for the Vessyl to work. Hanson expects to see some bumps in the road once they launch...

"I would let the early adopters, people who really invest in this information try it out," he said.

For those early adopters: you can pre-order the Vessyl for $99. Once it hits the market in 2015, it will cost $199.

Vessyl is being marketed as a consumer product, but Dr. Hanson believes technology like this will likely be the wave of the future in healthcare.
