PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Wawa associates lined up at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia early Thursday morning to take part in Hoagie Day.

The associates, about 150 in all, were hard at work assembling a five-ton Wawa hoagie.

Once assembled, the enormous sandwich will be cut up into 17,000 shorti hoagies.

Those will be given out free of charge beginning at noon Thursday on Independence Mall to anyone who wants one.

Hoagie Day has become an annual tradition, part of the Wawa Welcome America! Festival celebrating the nation's birthday.

This year's edition is dedicated to honoring our soldiers and hometown heroes.

In addition hosting Hoagie Day on Thursday, the National Constitution Center is offering free admission all day long.
