Activity, not just workouts, needed to reduce heart, diabetes risk

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The American Heart Association has a message tonight - get out of your chair and start moving!

The group says once-a-day exercise isn't enough to counter the effects of sitting for 6 to 8 hours a day on the job.

And if you spend your leisure time sitting, you're adding to your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Today, for the first time, the Heart Association came out with an advisory, warning that sitting around can lead to trouble.

So in addition to daily exercise, add in other activity to get you sitting less and moving more.

Get up, walk to the water cooler, or choose a distant restroom - anything which will interrupt all that sitting with more motion.

Surveys indicate most American adults spend 6 to 8 hours a day, and save all their daily exercise for one block of time.
