WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A man has died after being shot in the back of the head in West Philadelphia.

It happened around 9:30 a.m. Thursday on the 4500 block of Merion Avenue.

One neighbor who wants to remain anonymous heard the gunfire around 9:30 a.m. down the block from his home - about 34 to perhaps 35 shots fired in all.

"I call it a lot of ammunition. Too many guns on the street," he said.

The victim, identified as 29-year-old Terrell Shields, was hit multiple times, including once in the back of the head.

"That's where I saw the guy slumped right over there by that fence," the neighbor said.

He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Philadelphia Police Captain John Ryan said, "We had a 29-year-old male, Terrell Shields. He was getting into his auto - two males approached and fired with two different handguns. He was hit multiple times, and pronounced shortly thereafter."

Police say they are looking for two gunmen who quickly fled the scene. The barrage of gunfire went into the walls of the house where Shields lived. And multiple shots hit his rented Chevrolet with Louisiana tags.

There is a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The incident remains under investigation.
