HOCKESSIN, Del. (WPVI) -- 11 horses were killed in a raging barn fire in Hockessin, Delaware Sunday night.

At least 10 fire companies were brought around 8:30 p.m. to fight the blaze at the Yorklyn Arabian Horse Garm on the 300 block of Gun Club Road.

It took more than hour to get the blaze under control.

With the nearest hydrant more than a mile away, fire companies used tankers to get water up the hill to fight the fire.

The state fire marshal says 11 very expensive Arabian horses perished.

One did manage to escape.

The Yorklyn Arabian farms is quite well regarded in the realm of Arabian horses, known for specializing in the breeding of straight Egyptian Arabians.

One male killed, firefighters were told, was worth at least $7-million because of its siring value.

The fire marshal is investigating.
