NEWARK, Del. (WPVI) -- A school bus crash at a middle school in Newark, Delaware left 12 people hurt, including 11 children and the bus driver.

The crash happened in the parking lot of the Shue-Medill Middle School in the 1500 block of Capitol Trail around 7 a.m.

Police say the bus slammed into a light pole there, lifting the front wheels off the ground. Photos from the Action Cam showed the light pole was knocked over.

The bus was loaded with 24 students at the time.

Medics say the 11 students were taken to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children for what are believed to be minor injuries.

The bus driver, identified as Arlene A. Holden, 60, of Newark, was treated and released from Christiana Hospital.

The initial investigation determined that Holden swerved after being cut off by an SUV, and then struck the light pole.

The white SUV fled from the parking lot in an unknown direction.

Holden works for the Christina School District Transportation Department. The district did not provide information regarding her driving record or how long she's been with the district.

Delaware State Police are investigating.

This was the students' last day of school before the holiday break.
