A tense standoff in Delaware left two people dead.

NEW CASTLE, Del. -- Two people are dead after a standoff with police in Delaware.

It began before 6 p.m. Sunday at the Georgetown Manor apartments in New Castle.

New Castle County Police arrived to find a man barricaded in an apartment.

A short time later officers heard a gunshot.

They evacuated residents from the building and called in crisis negotiators, who were able to contact the suspect by phone.

It ended several hours later, after police heard another gunshot.

Officers entered the apartment and found a man and woman dead.

There was no immediate word what led to the shootings.

An investigation is underway.
