They were developed for people with high risk for heart disease, but who can't handle the side effects of statins.

Although they can significantly cut LDL or 'bad' cholesterol, they cost more than $14,000 a year. By comparison, statins cost as little as $100 a year.

A new study says they are too expensive to be prescribed for a wide number of people, and their use should be limited.
