Clintons, Obamas to hold election-eve rally in Philly; road closures in effect

Preparations were well underway Monday morning for Hillary Clinton's big election-eve rally on Independence Mall. (WPVI)

Road closures are now in effect around Independence Mall in Philadelphia ahead of a large election-eve rally organized by Hillary Clinton's campaign.

The rally, set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday, is one of the Democrat's final rallies of the 2016 presidential race.

Clinton will be joined by President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton.

The Clintons and Obamas will also be joined by Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi, who are set to perform.


In preparation for the rally, the following roads were closed beginning at 10 a.m. Monday:

- Market Street, from 4th to 7th Street
- 5th Street, Arch to Market Street
- 6th Street, Arch to Chestnut Street

Preparations for the rally were in full swing Monday near the Independence Visitors Center on the National Mall.

Action News spoke with a number of people who were planning to attend.

"I do have tickets for this later," said Nina Ball of North Philadelphia. "Soooo going to check out Hillary and Barack Obama."

"We left early, got here early," said Lisa Briggs of Loch Haven, Pa., "because we were determined to stand in line for 14 hours and be in the front line."

Action News also heard relief from many on the mall that public transportation in the city will be in the process of getting back on track after a six-day strike.

"I'm glad the SEPTA strike is over because some people were going to use that as an excuse to not get to the polls or cry foul," said one voter.
