Standoff with police in Monroe Twp., NJ ends peacefully

A standoff between a man and police that forced evacuations in Monroe Township, Gloucester County has ended peacefully.

The situation began before 1 a.m. Friday at a home in the 1000 block of North Main Street near Meadows Drive.

Officers were called for a report of a suicidal male who barricaded himself inside his home.

The Gloucester County Tactical Team, Monroe Township Police and the fire department responded.

Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.



"We got some banging on the door, doorbell ringing like crazy," said Jared Schreffler.

Schreffler was woken up around 4:30 a.m. Officers were at the door of his home in the Fox Hollow development.

"It's two Monroe Township police officers," he told Action News. "They said, 'Sorry to bother you, but we have a suspect barricaded in a house behind yours with a long rifle.' He said the bullets were capable of going through the house so that we had to evacuate."

"When my mom woke me up, I saw everyone running around," said youngster Mya Williams. "Didn't know what was going on. Saw my sister crawling on the floor because we couldn't go out back or near the windows."

North Main Street was shut down to traffic. Evacuated residents were told they could go to the municipal building until it was safe to return.

"It was very alarming to be woken up at 4:30 in the morning, banging on the door," said resident Katie McFarland before it was all over. "We just hope everyone's okay, and we hope situation ends quickly and safely."

And it did end safely around 6:45 a.m.

Police say the man finally surrendered to police, and no one was hurt.
