Know the ABC's of avoiding ticks this season. Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5 p.m. on May 10, 2017. (WPVI)

There's been a lot of tick activity so far this spring, and it's expected to stay at high levels through summer.

So experts at the Mayo Clinic say it's time to learn the A-B-C's of avoiding ticks.

"A is for Avoid. You want to know where ticks are found and avoid these areas - so tall grasses, tall shrubs. Ticks can't fly, they can't jump, but they can crawl up vegetation and they extend their legs and they wait for something to come by," Dr. Bobbi Pritt said.

B is for bug spray anytime you go into grassy or wooded areas.

Products with DEET work best.

And C is for clothing - making sure no skin is left exposed for ticks to bite.

If you do get bitten, remove it carefully with tweezers...

And be on the lookout for a bullseye rash or other symptoms of Lyme disease.
